Accountability requires the vigorous participation of the press. The United States Constitution expects a vigilant press to defend its doctrine and inform the people when it's been violated... and show us how. When the journalists are distracted or lazy, subversion becomes the norm and rights are lost.

Chris, I fully realize your not happy about this being published. But journalists are not immune to misunderstandings of the First Amendment, despite their self-evident interests in the functionality and well-being of a free press (and, indeed, their long and important efforts to protect speech and press freedoms). In our Constitutional Republic, the free press holds a key responsibility to defend where the First Amendment is concerned. This, I believe, is evidence of the failure to recognize the true role local journalists have to fulfill on behalf of the citizenry. We have seen the results of a direct assault on the free press in Marion, Kansas, with the illegal raid on Joan and Eric Meyer, their employees, and their newsroom. Did Eric Meyer have to be a judge or an attorney, or obtain a court ruling to know he had been violated?
