Worm Moving in the Eye (Loa Loa) | Flies, Pathophysiology, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Loa loa infections (also known as Loiasis, and African Eye Worm) are caused by a nematode (roundworm), which can enter into a bite wound from the bite of particular fly species like Deer Fly, Mango fly and others. Mature Loa loa adult worms can produce 10,000s of new larval worms per day, which can enter into the blood stream, lead to swelling in different parts of the body, and also can enter into the eye and “move” in the conjunctiva of the eye. In this condition, worms can be observed to move in the skin and even in the vision of the patient. In this lesson, we discuss how individual can get infected, other signs and symptoms and long-term complications, and we also discuss how it is diagnosed and how it is treated.
