As home to one of the world’s premier high performance computing facilities, we’re taking things to whole new level in 2023. Exascale!
With advanced processors and cutting-edge components from Hewlett Packard Enterprise and AMD, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s first exascale-class supercomputer, El Capitan, is projected to exceed 2 exaFLOPS (two quintillion floating point operations per second) of peak performance, making it one of the most powerful supercomputers (if not THE most powerful) in the world when it comes online. Initially, El Capitan will be made available for open science applications, before being fully dedicated to national security work and ensuring the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories — LLNL, Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory — can meet their mission goals of keeping the nation’s nuclear stockpile safe, secure and reliable.
When the exascale era arrives at LLNL, researchers will be able to more efficiently model and simulate complex physics with a level of detail, accuracy and realism not possible today. And by combining simulations with artificial intelligence and machine learning, they’ll unlock entirely new pathways to discovery, including fusion energy. Our scientists will get better, faster answers to their questions, and be able to ask new ones they haven’t even dreamed of before.
