Bean began in 1912 in Freeport, Maine, when outdoorsman Leon Leonwood “L.L.” Bean invented the Maine Hunting Shoe (the original Bean Boot) after getting wet feet on a hunting trip. He sold the first pairs by mail-order flyer with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. When most of the first 100 pairs failed, he refunded everyone, fixed the design, and kept going.
