Liz Magill — former dean of Stanford Law School, provost of the University of Virginia, and president of the University of Pennsylvania — has been named the next Executive Vice President and Dean of Georgetown Law.
An award-winning legal scholar in constitutional and administrative law, Magill will become Georgetown Law’s 17th dean on August 1, 2026. She brings nearly three decades of experience as a professor and academic leader, including her time clerking for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and serving in senior leadership roles at some of the nation’s leading institutions.
For Magill, this appointment is both professional and deeply personal. The daughter of Judge Frank Magill (SFS’51, L’55), a Georgetown graduate whose Jesuit education transformed his life, she grew up hearing stories about the university’s impact. “The institution utterly transformed my family’s life,” she reflects.
“Georgetown’s Jesuit values — care for the whole person, justice and service — will be my North Star.”
As she returns to her professional roots in law, Magill is eager to build on Georgetown Law’s excellence, impact and global reach in the heart of Washington, DC.
