Living Souls Balblair 10YO, 46% - Whisky Wednesday
Balblair is such a great distillery. They create a wonderful new-make spirit and age it mostly in ex-bourbon to push this top quality fruitiness, but I must say that it's rare that I come across a younger, indie bottling of Balblair.
Not only is this unusual, but it's also been finished in a Limousin XO cask. French oak can have some excellent, individual characteristic, as well having some flavour profiles that are adjacent to sherry. I must say, thought, that this offering of Balblair is one of the most unique things I've ever come across.
It smells like something much older. Aged leather and ripe fruit lead the way/ The palate transforms it into this mega-creamy, buttery style of whisky, something which I've only ever seen before in brands like Redbreast. After this we get those huge perfumed finish with notes of cardamom and bergamot. What an insane bottle of whisky for £55!
