Far back in the mists of time, there was a very famous and celebrated Rome Total War mod called The Fourth Age. Based loosely upon JRR Tolkien's abandoned manuscript for a Lord of the Rings sequel, this mod takes us to middle earth, centuries after the return of the King, and Sauron's defeat. FATW manages to be a love-letter to the works of Tolkien while also creating an interesting new sandbox environment where there is no canonical outcome, and fans of Middle Earth are free to determine the future of this beloved world for themselves. However it has been a very long time since Rome Total War released. Some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. Rome Total War now runs very poorly on modern systems, and sadly the mod (as you shall see) is left in a crash-prone and buggy state. Perhaps it can be saved if someone manages to port it to the Remaster, but for now it's hard work to try and play. Nevertheless I felt it deserved a place in this modding showcase series because of how significant it was in its day.
