Sign language is a valuable skill behind prison walls.
Gang members use it to communicate silently and covertly from one cell to another back in the SHU, and on many of the more serious yards.
But the sign language that inmates learn isn't always the same ASL that is commonly used outside of prison, there are many reasons for this.
Today I will be speaking primarily about sign language in prison.
