It's no secret that when it comes to classical musicians trying to improv... we kinda suck. And it makes sense, because so much of what classical musicians do is to adhere to composers like Beethoven or Mozart where everything is written clearly in the manuscript, and where the composers word is basically "god". Our role is merely an interpreter of these great composers and the freedom and creativity is within and behind each and every note that has been carefully crafted and thought out.
I've always been the type of artist to branch out and try new things though, especially when it comes to music. That's why I decided to ask Taiwanese Jazz Pianist Tseng-Yi "Mike" Tseng to give me some tips on how to improvise, and share some insights for those of you who might be thinking of giving improvisation a shot!
