Lord of the Rings mods are nothing new in total war - there were at least two made for Rome back in the day, and there's another in the works for Attila. But Third Age, made for Medieval 2 is by far the most popular, and these days, thanks to the hard work of the Divide & Conquer mod team, it has experienced a huge renaissance in popularity. It's not hard to see why - Divide & Conquer offers an utterly comprehensive Tolkien experience that pleases both film-enjoyers and book-readers, while still managing to create a campaign that is engaging and fun purely in gameplay terms. Even the most obscure of Middle Earth's factions are showered with love and attention in this mod, meaning you'll probably struggle to find another Medieval 2 experience with the same sheer quantity of replay value.
