The District Attorney for Gaston County, Locke Bell, called the shooting of a woman on Sunday night by a Gastonia City Police officer an “accident.”
On Sunday night, a woman, identified as Brittany Lynn, 28, was taken to the hospital after an officer, identified as Gastonia Police Officer Stephen Whisnant, 24, fired at a home on Gray Street.
Warrants state officers were “investigating a noise disturbance call.”
Brittany Lynn, who spoke to reporters off camera, said moments after she opened the door she was shot. Warrants state during the encounter that the woman’s brother, 31-year-old Jarvis Lynn, “refused to follow an officer’s commands to drop his weapon.”
Public documents also state the male suspect, who was not shot, held had a “American Tactical 1911 Military .45 Cal Pistol,” which is illegal for him to possess because of a prior felony conviction.
He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and resisting a public officer.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation in looking into the shooting.
“a shot was fired” while the woman’s family members said it was several. Officer Stephen Whisnant has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard practice.
