Overview
Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980 and in 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, over 600 million were obese. In the U.S. alone, more than one-third of adults are obese. Excess body fat poses many health risks such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease to name a few. While diet and lifestyle strategies are critical to long-term weight management success, the increased prevalence of overweight and obese individuals indicates the need for a more comprehensive approach. Obesity is now understood to be a multifaceted disease involving hormonal, inflammatory, gastrointestinal and nutrient imbalances. Additional interventions are needed to make conventional approaches effective. Advanced nutritional diagnostic testing may help identify contributing factors such as oxidative stress, toxins, and nutritional deficiencies to allow for a personalized treatment plan for effective weight loss and weight loss maintenance.

Learning Objectives
• Review factors that lead to nutrient imbalances in the obese patient.
• Review the impact of oxidative stress on the obese patient.
• Apply diagnostic testing to evaluate areas that may play a causative role in the etiology of obesity.
• Develop a comprehensive nutritional strategy for successful weight loss and weight loss maintenance.
