SpaceX is gearing up for the fourth flight test of its Starship rocket, currently scheduled for June 6, 2024, pending final regulatory approval from the FAA. This test, known as IFT-4, aims to demonstrate significant improvements in both the hardware and operational procedures based on lessons learned from the previous flights.
Beginning 30 minutes before the scheduled liftoff time, which is set for 7 a.m. local Texas time (8 a.m. EDT)
Key objectives for this flight include achieving a controlled reentry and splashdown of the Starship in the Indian Ocean, and a landing burn and soft splashdown of the Super Heavy booster in the Gulf of Mexico. This differs from previous flights, which primarily focused on reaching orbit and testing various in-flight systems.
Several upgrades have been made to address issues from earlier flights. These include adding more roll control thrusters to improve attitude control during reentry and enhancing the filtration capabilities in the propellant tanks to prevent blockages that previously caused engine failures
SpaceX's fourth flight test of the Starship is a crucial step towards achieving reusable spacecraft technology. With significant upgrades and a focus on successful reentry and landing, this flight aims to demonstrate the vehicle's capabilities and address previous issues. The test is a part of broader efforts to support NASA's lunar missions and future Mars expeditions.
