A paddle out off the coast of Lahaina is underway, one year after fires devastated the historic town and claimed the lives of 102 people.

Surfers gathered Thursday morning at Hanaka‘ō‘ō Beach Park in remembrance of the Aug. 8 fires. Thousands were expected to attend.

A luncheon was planned Thursday afternoon in honor of Kula.
