An asteroid as wide as the Empire State Building is tall, named 2020 XR, will pass by Earth on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, precisely 11 years after its discovery. Though categorized as a "potentially hazardous object" due to its size (450 meters) and proximity (1.4 million miles from Earth, about 5.7 times the distance to the Moon), it poses no threat. Discovered by the Pan-STARRS 2 telescope in Hawaii on December 4, 2020, 2020 XR is an Apollo asteroid, a class of Near-Earth Objects with orbits crossing Earth's path. Its closest approach on December 3, 2024, starting at 18:30 UTC. Meanwhile, on April 13, 2029, another asteroid, Apophis, will pass closer than any asteroid of its size in recorded history, at 19,635 miles from Earth. Space agencies plan to study Apophis during its approach, with missions like ESA's RAMSES and NASA's OSIRIS-Apophis Explorer. These events provide a rare opportunity to observe and study asteroids, deepening our understanding of these celestial bodies.
