mapleshade has been rotting in the dark forest for moons before finally, reedshine, appledusk, their kits, and all who had taken her for granted, decide to talk to her once more. reedshine looks on the brighter side, trying to form a relationship with her, while appledusk is still not in the mood to talk to her. after talking things out with reedshine, they become friends, yet appledusk is still wary. all the other cats who had been watching now see the side of mapleshade that they couldn't see before, and befriend her. they all try to persuade appledusk to join in, and succeed, mapleshade's former mate beginning to bond with her in the end.
