This audio recording was made with a Soundtrap Hydrophone sampling at 9600 Hz. Southern Right Whales are baleen whales that produce low frequency sounds. Sound is one of the primary senses with which whales interact with the world around them. Most of the underwater world is dimly lit, so whales have evolved to produce and hear sounds over long distances. Sound travels at a speed of 340 meters per second in air and 1500 meters per second in water. That's over 4 times faster underwater! The low frequency sounds produced by baleen whales are able to travel further in the ocean - and still be detectable - than the sounds produced by dolphins, which are of a high frequency. Though it is interesting to note that low frequency sounds are more easily drowned out by background noise than their high frequency counterparts. An example of background or ambient noise in the ocean would be traveling ships or waves breaking over a reef. Sound scientists, or scientists in the field of bioacoustics study the sounds of nature. They also study the impact of human noise on nature.

The Sound Perception in Animals Workshop 2023 arose from the idea of bringing highly qualified experts in bioacoustics to promote capacity building for South African students and researchers on the topic. The event was possible due to the collaboration between the African Bioacoustics Community through Sea Search Research and Conservation and the University of Southern Denmark, taking place at the Shark Spotters venue, in Muizenberg, Cape Town, on the 17th of May 2023.
