On the afternoon of July 22, 2026, a wildfire broke out in Mafra (Igreja Nova e Cheleiros), approximately 23 km northwest of Lisbon Airport (LPPT). Driven by prevailing north/northwesterly winds, the resulting smoke plume drifted directly into the final approach corridor for Runway 02.
In addition to reduced visibility, active low altitude maneuvers and water scooping operations by firefighting aircraft required temporary airspace restrictions. As a result, arrivals and departures at Humberto Delgado Airport were briefly suspended, forcing several commercial flights into holding patterns and leading to at least six diversions to Porto and Faro. Operations gradually returned to normal after ground crews contained the main fire fronts later that evening.
