You can also see an Amtrak train to Boston in the background as the Port Washington Branch train leaves Woodside for Penn Station.
The Corona Plaza elevated station reminds me of the old Herald Square Station on the 6th Avenue Elevated Line. Those old Manhattan elevated stations were appreciated in art and photography for their Swiss Chalet style designs.
Although the 9th Avenue "Yonkers" line had been around in one form or another since the late 1860's, when the Sixth Avenue Elevated line opened in 1878 it was the first actual commuter rail line in the city. The 6th Avenue line was a hit from it's first day. Lines of people formed around the block at every station, waiting to take a ride on the new train from downtown to Central Park. Crowds of people lined the route, waving to every passing train. On the first Saturday after the line opened, it was a rainy day. There was nothing to do in 1878 on a rainy Saturday so people who lived up near Central Park decided for the first time, "Why not take the train to the office?" This was reported in the newspapers.
As the crowded trains ran up and down 6th Avenue, the horse drawn cars which were the only form of transportation along 6th Avenue until now, slowly drove up and down the Avenue, empty. People on the elevated trains complained about seat hogs and men who filled the train car with smoke from their cigars. Newsboys sneaked up to the station platforms and snatched the tickets from people's hands to sell them at a discount on the street.
Ironically once the subway system opened at the turn of the century, the elevated trains lost their passengers and now they rode up and down the Avenue almost empty until the elevated lines were demolished. They would advertise "Ride up here in the fresh air." It is nice to see that some elevated track remains in the city.
