I saw this video youtube.com/watch?v=XbTn8CGjVSs and thought, "I should try that!"
This is the result. It takes a standard analogue camera for the video source. The idea is the circuit sweeps across the picture horizontally (the white line) and when it encounters a black area, it samples the current vertical sweep voltage and enables the trigger output. These control voltages are updated 50 times a second (PAL) and sent to the synthesiser. If the control voltage reaches the bottom of the screen without finding anything, the control voltage isn't updated and the trigger voltage is disabled.
The result is the ability to draw lines or whatever you please on a piece of paper and have corresponding sounds to those lines. The topmost line is followed.
