Lindsay Clancy's defense wants the jury to believe mental illness left her legally insane when she killed her three children. But the more evidence I see, the harder I find that explanation to accept.
In today's show, I walk through the evidence I believe presents the biggest problem for Clancy's insanity defense. She allegedly researched how long the killings would take, calculated the time required for her husband Patrick to complete an errand, sent him out of the house, and then gave him an additional errand when he called home. After one child had already been killed, she reportedly returned Patrick's call, assured him everything was fine, and then continued. To me, that looks like sophisticated planning and concealment—not someone completely disconnected from reality.
I also examine testimony about Clancy's earlier intrusive thoughts, including evidence that she described them as her own internal thoughts rather than outside voices or auditory hallucinations. Postpartum psychosis is real, and I don't dismiss the enormous physical and psychological burden childbirth can place on a mother. But the jury's job is to determine whether Clancy actually met Massachusetts' legal standard for insanity when these children were killed. I believe the evidence gives prosecutors a powerful argument that she did not.
