In New York City, gangs from across the boroughs are summoned to a midnight meeting by Cyrus, leader of the powerful Gramercy Riffs. The Warriors, from Coney Island accept the invitation, sending nine unarmed delegates led by war chief Cleon.

Cyrus has a reputation as a visionary, respected by almost every gang in the City, and his message of unity and power is intoxicating. He proposes a unification: if the gangs stop fighting and work together, they can outnumber the police and control the entire city.

The vision electrifies the crowd, but chaos erupts when Luther, leader of the Rogues, shoots Cyrus. The police raid the gathering, and in the panic, the Warriors are falsely accused of his murder. Suddenly hunted by every gang in the city and pursued by cops, the Warriors must bop their way back home to Coney Island.
