On a simple , 3 chord blues in F:
On the F chord I limit yourself to playing F, A, C and D (F6)
On the Bb chord I limit yourself to the notes Bb D, F andG. (Bb6)
and on the C chord limit yourself to notes C E G and A. (C6)
I hope by practicing this simple exercise you will see that
there is alot of creativity in placing limits on ourselves in jazz.
Jazz players already play with limitations anyway.
For instance, agreeing to play in a certain key, or time signature.
or in a certain style, and none of these hinder creativity.
A well, you still have the freedom to play around with the rhythm,
the articulation, the range, and the dynamics.
Furthermore this exercise is great as you can play honestly
and according to your level.
No need to play fast if you don t have the chops
or play high if you are not comfortable.
