Here's a concept that my kids are fascinated with, and by extension, also me: Liminal spaces, liminality, and specifically here, liminal spaces in games. But, then I've always been fascinated by liminal spaces, and the feeling they bring; a kind of nostalgic disconnected anxiety, but until recently, I didn't realise there was a name for these spaces.
