A fiend who I used to work with gave me City & Colours first album and I loved it from the start. It's still my favourite album by him. I love the simplicity of the production and his voice is so effortlessly sweet.
As usual, singing along in the car and how I think it sounds and how it actually sounds when recorded are vastly different.
I did a few different takes of the vocal as initially I tried to slip between falsetto and head voice like I think he is doing which sounds seamless but when I did it the transition was really obvious. The pitch is just at the wrong register to comfortably do a soft head voice and is at the lower end of falsetto really.
Then I tried a combination of head and mix which again sounded odd so then I tried the whole song with a stronger mix voice but the end of the song lost its impact by not having that 'oomph' stand out so settled with pretty much falsetto throughout (except the end), there are a couple of words where i drop to head and you can hear the change in tone.
As I can't help doing I added more instruments than in the original song and not to improve it but just because I never know when to back off.
I didn't film the additional piano bits as I had recorded it as in the original then added the extra for the end section separately.
