The threshold smoothing angle next to Auto Assign is only for the Auto Assign function.

he angle threshold value in the Smoothing info window only applies to the Auto Assign feature. This is the explanation from the Lightwave manual "This field will examine the angle between adjacent polygons and create smoothing groups accordingly" Also when using Smoothing Groups you don't have to turn on or adjust the smoothing parameters in the Surface Editor. You can keep it turned off. When using Smoothing Groups it takes top priority so the smoothing options in the Surface Editor are ignored

Well a smoothing group is an area of topology where the boundaries between the neighbours are sharp, and they are smooth in the middle.
