Adorama | Light Reflections with Mylar in a Tiny Studio | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey @Adorama | Uploaded March 2024 | Updated October 2024, 6 days ago.
If you’re wondering how to make ripple-like reflections for your next portrait sessions, Mylar is what you need. This amazing material is super shiny, easy to store, and endlessly reusable making it the perfect choice for small home studios.

With a floor area of just 8 feet by 8 feet, photographer Gavin Hoey attempts to create amazing reflective portraits with Mylar in the smallest of temporary studio spaces. He takes you on a journey that starts with the essential skills to best light Mylar for reflections showing how making your light larger or smaller will make the reflections sharper and softer.

Finally, Gavin adds a splash of color to his images. He explains that you can recreate this effect by altering your camera's white balance or adding colored gels to your flash. To add more variety and vibrance, Gavin adds pearlescent "holographic" film between the flash and the Mylar.

Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to YouTube. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.
