Anyone that has done any traditional woodwork will have used a plane at one time or another. You can now get electric planes, but I am referring to the traditional plane. Sometimes made of wood, sometimes of metal, but in both cases containing a sharp blade which allowed you to shave off a thin layer of wood. But in this video Tim demonstrates some old planes that do some quite unusual things.
Tim starts by showing a picture that has a frame made from moulded pieces of wood. These days there are machines that create these mouldings automatically. But in the past this - like many things - had to be done manually. And Tim demonstrates a couple of very old planes that have shaped blades that allow them to create mouldings!
Finally, Tim demonstrates a plane that allows the user to create wooden spills, the kind of things that allows you to take a flame from one place to another - from the stove to a candle for example.
