Within the progressive scene and because of its sound, Lifting Line Theory is a project often placed in a more symphonic territory, where songs are in no rush to reach their end and time can be quite stretched. The compositions draw their influences from the so-called golden era of progressive rock, drinking from the source of fundamental names of the genre such as Genesis and Yes. However, this heritage appears less as explicit reverence and more as a way of thinking about sound, even if they follow a less technical and intricate path.
But "The Last Goodbye" is an album that avoids the tendency to sound overly grandiose, with classic excesses or more bloated moments. The record favors restraint even when it flirts with more elaborate structures. Intricate passages do exist, especially in the epic that opens the album, but overall what stands out are the melodies, both instrumental and vocal. They are beautiful, yet they follow a simpler line, without acrobatics.
