I cannot overstate the importance of being a good advocate for your loved one if they are ever in hospital. As a doctor, I’ve worked in dozens of different hospitals in the USA and internationally, and it’s always the same: hospitals are extremely busy, staff are overstretched, and mistakes unfortunately can happen.
The family member at the bedside is invaluable. Ask the right questions, notice when something isn’t right, make sure the medical staff are completely on the ball. It’s lifesaving, especially if your loved one is very sick or vulnerable and not able to advocate for themselves
