On the 25th my sister's pet, our oldest and most precious hen, Goldie, was killed by a hawk while we were out of our house. I went outside to pet my hen Blake and her baby chick and found Goldie dead in her outside cage. She did not die peacefully; it was a brutal death that I never imagined would have happened. It was honestly shocking to all of us. Goldie was honestly our first very chicken and "real" pet that my sisters and I ever had. We've had her for almost 8 long years and throughout her life she was survived many things that should have killed her: first I stepped on her when she was a chick, a wooden beam we used for her roost fell on her head, and then she was brutally attacked and basically scalped by other chickens of ours. Goldie in the last year also started laying soft shelled egg and would frequently get egg bound. Goldie was also only a little Dutch Bantam hen that was probably only about 6 inches long [excluding her tail]. She was a clever hen who was more than "just a chicken" to us and she had as much personality as a little dog (chickens are actually pretty smart in general despite the popular belief). She knew her name along with our feeding time "call" and would always run to us when we said her name. If she offered her something she didn't care to eat she would actually shake her head "no". Seriously. She would do that.
I'm still in shock over her death, because I kinda thought she would live forever after all she's survived. There will never again be a chicken like Goldie.
