Lichens can often appear "dead" if it hasn't rained for sometime or simply no fogs or other forms of moisture to hydrate them. This amazing symbiotic life form/s, (fungal/algal) existing from the south pole to the northern hemispheres, encountered across countless environments, needs water like many living things for reproduction to occur.
Lichens can live for many many years and colonise everything from synthetic substrates (such as painted surfaces) to natural, endure high saline conditions and extreme UV irradiation, produce compounds capable of dissolving rocks and contrary to popular belief actually grow rapidly for some species, capable also of living in extremes of nitrate levels. These are just a fraction of what this amazing life forms are capable of.

Once it rains though they "move" rapidly to show their true forms.
