I use a lot of blue shield dice to mitigate damage. It doesn't make much sense to use blue dice for stagger damage but a blue dice that loses a clash still reduces damage. In high dice rolls that you can't win it's easier to throw a shield dice against it to reduce the damage you take and also selectively picking key pages that resist the damage type to reduce as much damage as possible.
