There are a lot of different factors, that you can get overwhelmed and just give up. Well not today! We are going to break it down for you. But this video ended up being too long, so you're going to get it all in two parts!Where are you going to put your new saltwater aquarium? Where you live matters. Are you in a house, a dorm room, a condo? Are there rules that limit how big of a tank you can get? And on top of that, are you on the ground floor or higher? Why you may ask? Because water is super heavy.1 gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds. So if you live in an old house or on the second story or higher, you need to make sure that your floor can support the weight. If you are going with something 40 gallons or less, you will probably be alright, but if you want 100 gallons plus, do your research, and call in a contractor if need be to assess the situation!Should you buy a glass or acrylic tank? Let's be real here. You really don't have a choice. Pretty much all of the commercially available tanks are glass. If you want to buy an acrylic tank, you may have to get something custom made. Why are tanks glass? Because they are inexpensive and don't scratch easily. Another big consideration is where the filtration happens. We are not going to talk about filtration. That will take several hours of future videos, so stay tuned. But, different tanks filter their water in different ways. Some use a hang on the back filter, others a rear filtration chamber, some use canister filters, and others use sumps.You don't need to fully understand these, but it is important to know that what tank you buy today, will dictate where your filtration happens, how much filtration you can accomplish, and what kinds of filtration equipment you can use.Lastly is budget. We take a deep dive into initial and ongoing costs of tanks. You may think that spending an extra $300 for a bigger tank is a one type cost, but it's not. All filtration for reef tanks falls in to one of three categories: mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. We aren't going in depth into each one in this video, but check out the next three episodes for way more info than you ever wanted to know.The focus for this video is on the types and locations where filtration occurs. The first is called a hang on the back (HOB) or power filter. This is your standard type of filter that you get from any big box store that just hangs on the side of your aquarium. It is inexpensive, and unsightly, and is fine for jobs that don't need a lot of filtration power. You can totally run a successful saltwater aquarium with this type of filter.Then we have all in on (AIO) style tanks, which just means the filtration happens in a rear chamber. Just take a normal glass aquarium, add a baffle along the back, and bam, you have an AIO tank. I love this style tank because you can hide all of your filtration gear behind the baffle, and it offers more filtration potential than a standard HOB filter.Canister filters are next, and while not common in the saltwater side of the hobby, you can use them. If you are coming over from freshwater tanks, you may have an extra canister filter lying around. You could definitely repurpose it for your new saltwater build. You'll just need to make sure the canister filter has a powerful pump to filter the water.Lastly are sumps. Sumps are probably, no, not probably, sumps are the gold standard for saltwater aquarium filtration. A sump is just a separate tank that hides in your stand below the display aquarium. We've already discussed reef sand and how to make saltwater, but how do you add these two things into your display tank safely?Well, it's not that hard. Start by adding the reef "live" sand first. Just be sure to scoop it in gently, don't pour it in. You don't want to splatter the sand on the glass walls, because even after it's full of saltwater, you still may scratch the glass the first time you use a magnetic algae scraper.Then add the aquascape, and be sure it's settled firmly on the glass bottom, not on top of the sand. To add seawater, use a plate, bowl, or colander and pour the water directly on top. This will help disperse the water and not cause a huge sandstorm. Next up, install your return pump and either filter sock or sponge. Leave the filter sock in for about 24 hours, then take it out and rinse it, and put it back in. Needed to rinse and place in the tank. Only used 30 lbs, not the entire 60. I don't know what I was thinking buying that much.Filling the display tank was the easiest part, but it got tricky when adding water to the manifold and external pump. I discovered two leaks. One at the input and the other at the output of the Varios 4 pump. The issue was I didn't use plumbers tape to seal the threaded union. It looks fantastic actually. The Seahorse tank is going to sit at 72 degrees, so that meant a chiller install. And, Felicia McCauley recommended a UV sterilizer. Something with Seahorses not being good at fighting off different bacterias... something is missing from their guts.But, this JBJ RF-65 is an AIO system with a rear filtration chamber, and their just isn't any room for one large pump, let alone two small pumps. So, went ahead and bought a Reef Octopus Varios 4, and did a mix of hard/soft plumbing and created an awesome manifold with one empty head for future upgrades. Didn't even make one single glueing mistake, which is a first for me.We also just narrowly avoided disaster on the 10 gallon anemone hospital tank when I discovered two huge chips/cracks in the seam. My daughter accidentally knocked over some of my photography and lighting gear and cracked the tank. But I didn't notice it at the time. Luckily it was time to move over the remaining nems to the clownfish harem tank.And lastly another anemone update. There weren't a lot to choose from, but I was able to pick up a Rainbow/Rose bubble tip anemone for $100, which is a pretty dang good deal. Gorgeous colors, especially when compared to the acid washed gbta's I got last week.Since the green nems were healthy, I went ahead and moved them to the Harem tank, and within a few days they were already hosting the nems. I have another couple bubble tips nems coming later this week, so I may have to move the newest addition a bit earlier than I had hoped.Two dead fish this week from different tanks. The first death was expected... The algae eating blenny. Just started to death. My moral dilemma is whether my entire business model is flawed. Should I be helping beginners get into this hobby when it is so hard. We have a responsibility to our fish and livestock, and that's something I take seriously.Do you perform autopsies on your dead fish? I usually don't, except when I have no idea why they died. So I looked all over the Anthias, including in its gills, and I couldn't figure it out. Maybe it was just its time.Sometimes you put two clownfish together in a tank, one is bigger, and the other is smaller, and they are the same species, and you think they will work out there dominance issues... but they don't. Well, that happened this week. The bigger longfin clownfish just wouldn't stop going after the smaller one. Badly nipped fins, rapid breathing. I think it might be time to move the smaller guy, but I don't know where.And the new Seahorse/macroalgae tank has arrived! Totally cycled. We started dosing Red Sea AB+ because why not, and also, the nutrient levels have been too low so this should help a bit. I'll say that the zoa rock is looking pretty good, but somehow two aiptasia hitchhiked their way over. So we break out the Mojano want to get rid of them. I thought I got it all, but the next day the two aiptasia were back at it again.The biopellet reactor has been up and running for two weeks now, and nitrates are still at 25 ppm. Not surprising, as I've heard it can take 6 weeks to start working. We'll keep you updated.I was able to move the bubble coral to the frag tank, and that allowed me to turn up the MP10's in the fluval mixed reef all the way. That has definitely helped with the cyanobacteria, but there are still dead patches where it is flourishing. I'm not giving up hope yet, but there is always chemiclean just in case.Maxspect sent me their Jump LED light, so we give it a whirl. First glance seems like an affordable option somewhere between an AI Prime and Hydra. We break out the PAR meter, and it does put out some good PAR. Perfect size for a 20 gallon tank, it would be stretching it a bit coverage wise for a 40 gallon breeder size.We are down to seven clownfish in the harem tank. There were supposed to be ten, one died, then one was getting abused so I moved tanks, and then another was being picked on, and he was also moved.And I was super excited to get 11 new anemones, but they were disappointing to say the least. This poor thing has been in misery ever since I put it into the tank. It immediately lost all of its color and tentacles, and started to wander around the tank aimlessly. While I don't hold out much hope for it, after the positive results from the watermelon bubble tip, I've started treating the gbta with cipro in the quarantine tank. So far so good, so we'll see if it can make a full recovery.The clownfish have settled into the harem tank, and the aggression is definitely showing itself. There are 9 Premium Sea & Reef Black Ice Clownfish. The tank is basically a 40 gallon breeder, which is likely too small. But, we are trying an experiment to see if we can spread out the agression enough and find success. So far so good. There are no nipped fins and the smaller clowns have staked out their hiding spots. It's definitely time for some more anemones though, but I want to wait another couple weeks to make sure the current nems keep recovering.Still struggling with cyanobacteria in the fluval reef tank. I'm trying to stay away from antibiotics, so I'm just doing manual removal and dosing beneficial bacteria everyday. We'll have to see if it works.You guys freaked out over the biopellets, and you freaked me out! So we take out 1/2 of the biopellets, just to be safe!It is finally time to make my first zoa garden! These aren't for the hobbyists who either want to or need to build an aquarium on the cheap. These are middle of the road, nudging toward top end builds. They are beautiful systems with high quality gear. We start by going through the build lists, starting with the 20 gallon Innovative Marine build. This tank is gorgeous, low iron glass, comes with a DC return pump, filter sock, custom acrylic caddy, mesh screen top, and magnetic algae scraper. Then we pair that with the Aquaillumination Prime 16 HD lights and the flex arm. We do recommend buying the Aquamaxx Puratech Deluxe 4 stage RO/DI filter with booster pump, inline tds meter, pressure gauge, and computer controlled ro membrane flush. Total price of this build list is just over $1,400. But, we are able to strip away $700 by getting rid of a few things.Then we move on to the 45 gallon JBJ RF-45. Definitely move expensive, but so much more water volume and included stand. I've never owned this system, but I just bought it today, so you can all follow along as we build it together. Need a bigger light for this one, so we chose the AI Hydra 32 with flex arm. Finnex 150 watt titanium heater with analog controller, RO/DI filter, Red Sea salt mix, and tons more. Total cost for this build is $2,155. I know why it started. I got lazy, switched to an automatic feeder, and bam, way too many nutrients for the tank. It took me a few months to get all the algae, and I finally beat it. I had to do a ton of manual removal, switch to frozen food, change my mechanical filter daily, use a turkey baster in the crevices, and use a one week treatment of Brightwell Razor. But it's pretty much gone now, which is awesome!The ICP test results are back! We go through all the results, but overall, I don't see a huge problem that would be causing my anemones to be unhappy. What are your thoughts? I did notice that silicon was high, and that's because my DI resin is exhausted, so we go ahead and change all three DI resin canisters!I caught a hermit crab walking around the tank without a shell! I guess it got too big, but couldn't find a suitable replacement! They are funny looking creatures, but luckily I found a good shell for it, and the crab is now safe and sound!The second urchin died, and I don't know why. Maybe the Razor treatment?I'm sick of waiting for the 14 gallon peninsula tank to cycle, so we're moving the two premium longfin black storm clowns! I just looked up their price, and they cost almost $300 a piece! Crazy, but they are gorgeous!What would a Gallery update be without an anemone update. And shockingly, we pretty much have good news... for the first time ever!And it's official... the brand new macroalgae seahorse tank is going to be shipped soon. But let's be real here... The Kamoer pumps need help. The pump is great, if you can connect it! But it would not connect. I had to reach out to Coralvue for help, and luckily they told me a trick that worked. But the app needs changing, because nobody is going to buy these if they can't easily connect to the WiFi network.A clownfish died. And it was my fault. There were gaps in the mesh screen after I moved the Maxspect Razor light, and I knew they were there, but I was lazy and didn't make a new screen. So I come out one morning to find a dead, dry, beautiful small clown on top of the mesh screen.The 14 gallon peninsula, after one month, using a fast fishless cycle... is still not cycled! So frustrating!I've been treating the sick watermelon bubble tip anemone in the hospital tank for a week now, and we give the day by day update... Ammonia is finally going down , and the nitrites are super high. Not ready for livestock yet, but progress is being made. Switch to Fritz Turbo Start, because the Microbacter 7 didn't seem to be doing a thing!Next up is the 24 gallon Fluval mixed reef tank. Still have green hair algae, which is annoying.Fourth tank is the 40 gallon breeder. Started dosing reef energy, but still struggling big time with NO3 levels. The second is to change the lights. I'm thinking going with an all t5 fixture, something I've never tried before.In Act 02, we are waiting for new life. Trying to be patient as the IM 14 gallon peninsula cycles, but it's cycling soooo slowly! But, once it is done, it is going to become a reef tank overnight. I have so many frags to move over, and the two longfin black storm clownfish are also ready for their new home! I can't wait to move them... well, I can wait... I just don't want to. But while we wait, we can check the PAR and do the wire management. Can anybody say musical montage sequence?!?! You know I love them!Act 03, waiting for something better. It's time to get this 40 gallon breeder tank back to a quarantine tank. The foxface rabbitfish is getting way to big, so I may need to either get rid of it or build a bigger tank. It may be time for a 120 gallon fish only tank. I've always wanted one, but I just don't want the extra work! Small tanks are dangerous for beginners, let's say anything 10 gallons or less, because small mistakes can have big consequences. But large tanks, let's say over 100 gallons, are super expensive and can give beginners too many options to start with, overcomplicating things.Our ideal beginner size would be between 20-75 gallons with a rear filtration chamber.It's important to know what your livestock goals are. If you know there is one fish you can't live without, then you are going to have to build everything around that one fish. For example, if you want a trigger fish in your tank, you can't have most corals, your tank needs to be between 150-300 gallons depending on the species, and triggerfish will eat other fish.There are four basic tank shapes, square, rectangle, bowfront, and curved edges.Hobbyists use all sorts of jargon when talking about tank styles. We go over cubes, rimmed, rimless, lagoon, frag, all in one, and a few more.And lastly, do you need a stand? Maybe. First up is the 24 gallon Fluval M60 mixed reef tank. Still battling with hair algae. Removed a ton last week, and it's growing back super quick. Tested phosphates and 0.24! Way too high. So I've cut back feeding and added a small baggie of GFO.The Reef Octopus Lux 90 Clownfish Harem Tank did not get the new anemones like it was supposed to. @Her Nano Reefs convinced me to wait, because the nems I currently have in there might have a bacterial infection. I didn't know nems could even get bacterial infections. So we hold off for now.The 40 gallon breeder frag tank is doing okay. High nitrates, and some of the corals just aren't growing. Close up underwater view of all the corals, and also added some GFO.To help disguise the 5-gallon auto top off buckets, I bought some heavy duty footstools, and it's time to install them.Also, the wire management is out of control on the 40 gallon breeder, so we spend 1.5 hours fixing that up, and it looks so much better!And last but not least, we have a new desktop Peninsula tank! Some of these are great for beginners and some are expert only.But, we want you to get excited, we want you to see what's possible in this hobby. Yes, it's going to take a lot of work, but stick with us through this series and we'll get you ready!There are three broad categories of aquariums out there: freshwater, brackish water, and saltwater, and these can be cold water or tropical. Most of us know about fresh and salt, but brackish water is a mixing of the two. Brackish water habitats are found where freshwater rivers and streams meet the oceans.Let's talk about the 10 different types of saltwater aquariums:- 01 Coldwater Marine- These tanks need to be cold, like 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and require a thick acrylic tank and a chiller. Not beginner friendly, and unless you live near a coldwater coastline, you may not be able to find the right livestock.- 02 Fish Only- usually 120-250 gallons, these are the tank you find at libraries, nail salons, and doctors offices. Can house a lot of cool fish without having to worry about corals!- 03 FOWLR- fish only with live rock tanks are perfect beginner tanks. You can combine really fun fish with a robust biological filter that the live rock offers.- 04 Softy/LPS- Soft corals and large polyp stony corals are my two favorite types. There are a lot of friendly beginner corals in this category that are perfect for a first time reefer!- 05 SPS- small polyp stony corals are a bit more difficult, but come in some crazy colors and shapes. Not a beginner friendly tank though I'm afraid!- 06 Mixed Reef- a combination of softies/lps/sps corals, a mixed reef offers a special set of challenges having to do with lighting, flow, and filtration requirements.- 07 Seahorse- who doesn't want a seahorse tank! These tanks need to be larger, with cooler water, pristine water chemistry, and low flow.- 08 Macroalgae- a great beginner tank, macroalgaes are inexpensive, gorgeous, and grow quickly. - 09 Predator- If you want fish that eat other fish, than this is the tank for you! But be careful, and choose your tank mates wisely!- 10 Nano- These are tanks under 10 gallons.
