OWL EGG INCUBATION
Gylfie needs all her energy to keep her eggs warm as the chicks inside develop. She sits on them 24 hours a day for nearly a month, using her body heat to keep the eggs at a medium 34C.
MALE BARN OWL HUNTS
And as she does so , Finn keeps her sustained with a steady supply of food. He spends his days catching small rodents, like shrews, and delivers three or four meals a day,
OWL TEAMWORK
Both owls are working hard in their respective roles, but there's always time for affection - and Finn continues to mate with Gylfie often, even though he’s not fertilising more eggs.
FINN FUSSES WITH EGGS
But this male barn owl is also utterly besotted by the prospect of chicks on the way and when Gylfie leaves the nest briefly, he hears a chick cheep from inside its shell. He responds by moving the egg away from the others and when Gylfie returns she seems displeased with the arrangement - she needs to keep all four eggs warm at once!
FIRST HATCH
The first chick takes over an hour to fully emerge and when it does it is bald and blind… it’s incredible to think in two months this chick will be ready to fly.
FIRST FEED
Already it knows how to swallow food and Gylfie tears up a meal into bite sized morsels and then tucks it under her feathers for warmth.
DAD MEETS OWLET
A few hours later, Finn sees the chick for the first time and is instantly attentive. Later, once the clutch has hatched, this male owl can't contain his curiousity and the cameras capture him gazing intently at his owlets as they lie, snugly underneath Gylfie.
SECOND EGG FAILS
Barn owls lay every two/three days and when a second chick does not appear for another six days, taking almost all day to emerge from its shell, it is clear one egg has failed. Gylfie soon removes the egg from underneath her.
FINAL CHICK HATCHES
Three days later, Gylfie stands to reveal a pip in the last egg. And soon, the third and final chick has hatched. Now these owl parents must work even harder to keep these tiny owlets warm and fed..
NEXT TIME…
In the next film, when disaster strikes, how will Gylfie get on as a single parent?

KINGFISHER EGG-LAYING
The female laid one egg a day on the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th April.
KINGFISHER EGGS
A kingfisher egg can weigh around 4.3g, which just over 10% of the average female's body weight (40gs) This clutch adds up to a whopping 70% of her weight. What an effort.
KINGFISHER BROODING
The incubation period for kingfisher eggs is around 20 days, and then the fledging is 22-26days later.

ANIMALS OF THE ALPS
I have just returned from a trip to the Chamonix Valley, a spectacular region in the French Alps where I trekked through forests and over snow-covered slopes to uncover the regions more unusual wildlife.
GUIDED TOUR
To guarantee a sighting and to stay safe in these wild mountains I took a guided tour with Daniel Rodrigues of Chamonix Guides chamonix-guides.com/fr
BLACK GROUSE
A black grouse lek is one of the most spectacular mating dances and increasingly rare to see. I travelled to the Alps for the chance to film it and was rewarded with spectacular views of grouse fanning out their tails and side-stepping against the bright white of snow.
EURASIAN PYGMY OWL
Europe's smallest owl, this species is so elusive I trekked through acres of forest to find it. But when I did I was lucky enough to be able to record the sound of the pygmy owl's call.

APOLLO & ATHENA
This kestrel couple live in a nest box in nearby Ash Wood where you can watch them live via a hidden camera in their nest: youtube.com/live/qULW9LE9uhE?feature=share. The female, Athena, is a very efficient bird. Watch her lay her egg clutch like clockwork, every third day.
KESTREL EGGS
Kestrels can lay up to seven eggs, so keep your eye on the live nest cam for a chance to watch Athena lay live: youtube.com/live/qULW9LE9uhE?feature=share
EGG INCUBATION
Kestrels normally begin to incubate their eggs after the third one is laid so you should notice Apollo and Athena inside the nest sharing the incubation in a more regular way now.

TAWNY OWL EGGS
It is not uncommon for eggs to fail to hatch and birds usually ignore them so it's strange to see Luna fuss over them.
LUNA'S CHICKS
Luna's clutch was laid at the beginning of March and her eldest chick is now two weeks old. See how quickly the chicks are growing on her nest-cam livestream: youtube.com/live/YyUgl4bDBt0
LUNA'S STORY
Luna has had her share of tragedy and when her eggs failed last year she fostered an orphaned brood. Perhaps she thinks there's still a chance? Watch the story youtu.be/LG0y9swWgm4

KINGFISHER COURTSHIP
Normally solitary birds, Kingfishers only come together to breed and the early stages of their courtship is often awkward so when they finally mate it can feel like a major milestone.
MALE VS FEMALE KINGFISHERS
The easiest way to tell the difference between male and female kingfishers is to look for the orange streak on the lower beak of the female, like a streak of lipstick.
KINGFISHER STORY

APOLLO & ATHENA
This kestrel couple are now beginning a third breeding season in Ash Wood and are a very efficient pair. Athena has a no-nonsense approach to raising a family and has clear expectations of how Apollo, the younger of the pair, should play his part. Thankfully he is a very attentive partner.
KESTREL EGGS
This is the second of what I expect will be a 6-7 egg clutch. Kestrels lay their eggs every 2-3 days so I'm expecting the next egg to be laid very soon. Keep your eye on the live nest cam for a chance to watch Athena lay live: youtube.com/live/qULW9LE9uhE?feature=share

ATHENA THE KESTREL
This is Athena and she is well known for her forthright manner. Watch her snatch the mouse her partner Apollo has brought for her and hop away to devour it in alone.
KESTREL COURTSHIP
In the early stages of courtship, male kestrels bring their partners a succession of gifts to prove they can provide for their mates and their future chicks.

ASH HOLLOW NEST
This nest box was built especially for this kestrel pair. Located in a restored woodland habit, it is clearly a desirable spot.
EARLY COURTSHIP
And despite staking their claim early, this kestrel must fight to keep it. Kestrel courtship rituals begin with the male, Apollo, securing a site and 'presenting' it to the female for her approval.
APOLLO VS JACKDAWS
But Apollo's has his job cut out for him. First he faces competition from a pair of jackdaws. One of the most intelligent birds on the planet, these birds are fearsome and toy with the male kestrel, pulling at his feathers.
APOLLO VS TAWNY OWL
At night, the onslaught continues. This time a neighbouring tawny owl, named Ozzy by followers of this channel, visits the nest. Tawny owls are much larger, heftier birds and Apollo quickly concedes.
KESTREL COURTSHIP
But Apollo's persistence pays off and by mid-February he is ready to show off the nest site to his mate, Athena. Watch him bow courteously as she enters. Her approval is essential for the next stage of their courtship.
ATHENA
Thankfully she approves and soon Apollo is showering her in gifts, proof he can provide for her and their future chicks. Their romance blossoms as he delivers a succession of voles, and even a lizard - a rare kestrel delicacy and hard to find here on the Yorkshire Wolds.
NEST SCRAPE
Athena demonstrates her approval by digging out a shallow hollow in the floor of the nest ready for her eggs.
FURTHER NEST INTRUSIONS
But the couple cannot afford to let down their guard. The jackdaws return and this time it is Athena who leads the defence.
AND DANGER
Then a stoat creeps into their nest looking for eggs and things become scary when a buzzard swipes at Apollo, only narrowly missing him. Buzzards are much larger birds and the knock could have easily hurt the kestrel. Then, to make matters worse a fierce storm hits blowing snow into the nest.
EGG LAYING
But on April 1st Athena lays her first egg and then lays a further five - producing one roughly every two days.
TEAMWORK ISSUES
Kestrels share brooding duties and Apollo is a dutiful partner. But the strain of egg-laying must be getting to Athena because shortly before she is due to lay her fourth egg she returns to find Apollo brooding the clutch and shouts at him to move.
APOLLO TRAPPED
But Athena is so busy clacking she doesn't seem to realise she is blocking his exit! He seems so confused and tries to climb the walls just to get out of her way.
NEXT TIME
Subscribe to the kestrel chicks hatch.

OWL PAIR
Female barn owl Gylfie is ready to raise a family this year but her owl partner is so unenthusiastic she's taken matters into her own hands. Watch the role reversal as she mounts him!
BARN OWL MATING
Barn owls mate by touching cloaca so you never know this could potentially work - but if nothing else hopefully Gylfie will have stimulated Dryer's interest.
DRYER'S STORY
Barn owl Dryer has an interesting backstory. An orphan, he was actually raised alongside Gylfie's former mate, Finn. You can read the full story here: robertefuller.com/diary/barn-owl-finds-new-foster-love-%f0%9f%a6%89

TAWNY OWL PARENTS
Female tawny owls are very protective of their young and often don't even allow their partners near. Luna regularly shoos Bomber away as soon as he has delivered food to the nest, urging him to go out and fetch more. This was true last year too, when the owl couple fostered as this video shows: youtu.be/di_tu2onSbQ
BOMBER
But Bomber seems very curious about his offspring and when Luna is out he takes his chance to be alone with them. Watch him land at the nest and then look back over his shoulder to check the coast is clear, it's almost as though he feels a little guilty about visiting his chicks!
TENDER MOMENT
Bomber is so gentle with the chicks and they seem to relish his attention. Watch one of them stretch up as he preens the other, as if to say: 'my turn now'.
DISTURBED BY A NOISE
Suddenly Bomber is alerted by a pheasant alarm call outside and he makes a quick exit. Perhaps the pheasant was announcing the presence of a tawny owl above, because moments later Luna returns.

CLUMSY LOVE
Kingfishers make such clumsy lovers! Normally solitary birds they only come together to breed and the early stages of their courtship is often awkward.
MALE VS FEMALE KINGFISHERS
The easiest way to tell the difference between male and female kingfishers is to look for the orange streak on the lower beak of the female, like a streak of lipstick.
LEARNING TO SHARE
Thankfully the female accepts the next gift from the male with more grace. These fish gifts are a show from the male that he will be able to provide for the female should they nest.

FIRST GLIMPSE
Watch the footage reel back to when the second chick first hatched out, still pink with wet feathers and then see how quickly it becomes a recognisable ball of fluff. Both owlets are propped against the remaining eggs for support - watch the youngest almost topple backwards after Luna leaves.
Just look at the proud look on Luna's face!

SWAN EGGS
Swans eggs are typically 12cm x 7cm in size and have a weight of around 350g and have such a thick shell they are easily strong enough to take the weight of an adult swan - as is evidenced here when the female steps nonchalantly onto one.
EGG LAYING
Swans tend to lay every 1-2 days and this clutch of total of nine eggs took just over two weeks to lay, with the last egg laid on March 27th 2023.
SWAN INCUBATION
The pen only begins to fully incubate once her clutch is complete. This ensures the chicks all hatch together and she incubates for roughly 35-41 days. I am expecting these chicks to hatch at the beginning of May.
MUTE SWANS
Mute swans are the most common of swan species here on mainland Britain and are easy to recognise by their orange bills which have a large black 'knob' at the base
MALE VS FEMALE SWANS
Female swan are known as 'pens' and males as 'cobs'. It is very difficult to tell the difference between the sexes and both are involved in parenting; but the cob is discernable by his behaviour - he tends to guard the nest while the pen leaves to feed.
MALE VS FEMALE ROLES
Until incubation begins it is often the cobb (or male) that sits on the eggs to protect them from predators although the heat he exerts is not enough to stimulate the embryos inside. Meanwhile the pen spends her time feeding up to ensure she is strong enough for the long days of incubation to come.
NEXT TIME
I will continue to post the highlights from this new nest camera as they happen so subscribe to follow the story.

APOLLO & ATHENA
Female kestrel Athena is known for being domineering. Watch her screech her impatience when her partner, the male kestrel Apollo, bring her a lizard treat. She is so impatient to receive the gift she then flies over to him and snatches it from his beak.
APOLLO SCRAPES HOPEFUL NEST HOLLOW
Athena then flies off with the lizard, leaving Apollo alone to scrape out a hopeful hollow in the nest box to suggest where she should lay her eggs.
THEIR KESTREL STORY
This kestrel pair are now well established and are getting ready for their third season together.
Last year this pair raised a clutch from this very nest, named Ash Hollow, and they seem determined to secure the site again.

TRAVEL LIKE ME
If you'd like to follow in my footsteps and see a harpy eagle for yourself, take a look at my travel page - where you can book a trip too: robertefuller.com/travel
LEGENDARY HARPY EAGLE
The harpy eagle is the national bird of Panama. Named after the harpies of Greek mythology, gruesome women with the bodies of birds, this gigantic eagle is the most powerful raptor on earth and its rear talons can measure five inches – bigger than the claws of a grizzly bear.
My guide, Eliecer takes me to a secret location and he’s confident we’ll get some good sightings.
But it’s gonna be quite a journey! From the camp, we travel forty minutes by car. Next, it’s a 15-minute canoe trip down the Chucunaque River and then we set off through the pastures on horseback and then walked through dense jungle to a lookout point.
THE CUIPO TREE
Eliecer, eventually pointed a finger to a small gap high in the tree canopy. And there it was. A huge nest, resting in the fork of a cuipo tree. Cuipo trees are the largest trees of this region and measure up to 200ft high, towering over the top of the rest of the canopy. Everything in this forest seemed super-sized, and so when I spotted a female harpy eagle sitting inside the nest, it felt surreal. Like coming across a mythical giant in an oversized land.
The harpy eagle is so impressive it is revered across Central and South America. As I trained my lens on it, it called out, a long whistle that rang out across the forest.
FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE CHICK
Eliecer said the sound meant she was hungry and was calling for the male to bring food. And then a small white head appeared over the rim of the nest. A chick about one month old. The female leaned over it, her only chick, and for a moment she looked fiercely protective. Mesmerised, we watched her and her chick for a total of six hours, ignoring the humidity. Throughout, the female called again and again for food. Then she took flight, her huge two-metre wings at full spread as she headed off into the forest.
But she didn’t go far, and I could just see her in a nearby tree. She was tussling with something which made me think she was hunting, but then she arrived back with a branch and it seemed that she was just refreshing the nest with some greenery.
MALE HARPY EAGLE FLIES IN
She did, however, seem hungry and kept searching the nest for food in vain. Males don’t bring food every day we were beginning to give up hope on seeing her mate at all when we heard the male finally return the female’s calls. Then all of a sudden, the male flew into the nest carrying prey. It was hard to see what he had brought as it filled his talons, but we watched the female take it from him and begin to feed it to the chick.
The male was smaller than the female. We watched him look around the nest before flying up to the branch above. He was there long enough for me to get some amazing footage of him and then he took flight, melting back into the forest.

Usually, tawny owl chicks hatch out under the cover of the female's feathers - but Luna needed to take a quick daily toilet break and wing stretch, so she left the nest for just under 10 minutes.

THE EGG HATCHING PROCESS
When a tawny owl egg is about to hatch, the chick inside the egg begins to move and break the shell using an egg tooth, a small, pointed protuberance on the top of its beak. The chick will then use its legs to push against the shell until it creates a small hole. This process is called pipping.
Once the chick has pipped, it will continue to move and work on breaking the shell until it can fully emerge. The process of hatching can take several hours, and the chick may rest intermittently throughout.
WHAT A TAWNY OWL CHICK LOOKS LIKE WHEN ITS FIRST BORN
When the chick has finally hatched, it will be covered in down feathers and its eyes will be closed. It will rely on its parents for warmth and protection, for the first 24 hours it can survive entirely on the yolk sack that is inside it. But soon, the mother will feed it regurgitated food.
The moment of hatching is a crucial and exciting moment in the life cycle of a tawny owl, and it marks the beginning of its journey into the world.
