Caucasian Sketches, Suite No. 2, Op. 42 (Russian: Кавказские эскизы, Сюита №2, «Иверия») is an orchestral suite by Russian composer Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov written in 1896, after he moved to Moscow. The work is more commonly known by the subtitle Iveria, the name given by the Greeks and Romans to the ancient kingdom of Kartli, corresponding roughly to the eastern and southern parts of the country of Georgia today.
After being a student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Ippolitov-Ivanov moved to Tbilisi, where he tried to become the director of its conservatory and its orchestra. In these years, he composed both Suite No. 1, in 1894, and Suite No. 2, in 1896.[1] This suite, as Suite No. 1 did, also presents re-used material from Georgian folk songs. Plus, he re-wrote some fragments from his Armenian Rhapsody on National Themes, Op. 48. Moreover, the suite itself represents, more specifically, the region of the coastal kingdom of Colchis, which became a meeting point of civilizations (Persian, Ottoman and Russian).
Lezginka is a national dance of the many peoples in the Caucasus region.
Lezginka can be a solo, couple or group dance. Men and women are dressed in traditional costumes; men wear a sword adorned on their side and women in long, flowing dresses. The man, imitating an eagle, dances in quick, concise steps; falling to his knees and leaping up quickly. The woman dances quietly, taking light, small steps—giving the appearance of her floating around the floor. When the dance is performed in pairs, the couples do not touch; the woman acknowledges the man, and dances discreetly about him.

The Symphony No. 4 in G major by Gustav Mahler was written in 1899 and 1900, though it incorporates a song originally written in 1892. The song, Das himmlische Leben, presents a childs vision of Heaven. It is sung by a soprano in the works fourth and last movement. Although typically described as being in the key of G major, the symphony employs a progressive tonal scheme ((b)/G E).
A typical performance of the Fourth lasts about an hour, making it one of Mahlers shorter symphonies. The performing forces are also small by Mahlers usual standard. These features have made it the most frequently performed Mahler symphony, though in recent years the First has gained ground.
