Lex Luthor received a lot of flack - despite what you may think of his character, his plan was actually pretty well laid (aside from a couple of holes) and highlighted a lot of the core of the character's core material. They gave him more of a reason of why he has it out for Superman and even created a connection to the flaws of his intelligence.
