Everyone remembers the Lewis and Clark expedition as a story of courage and discovery. Few people are ever told what really happened along that river. There was a tense standoff that came within seconds of becoming a massacre. There were grizzlies the men could not kill, even after putting ten balls through them. There were nights when the soldiers had nothing left to eat but their own horses, their candles, and eventually almost two hundred dogs bought from villages along the way. And there is a death the Blackfeet Nation still grieves, though most American history books pretend it never counted at all.
