Lewis Capaldi took a well-earned breather following the life-changing success of “Someone You Loved” and “Before You Go.” Throughout the pandemic, we didn’t hear too much from the genial Scottish singer, but 2019’s roguishly titled ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ was steadily working at becoming the UK’s best-selling album for two years straight. For his triumphant return - the atypically upbeat “Forget Me” and its accompanying ’80s pool party video - Lewis decided to show off some skin. To be perched on a floatie in only undies having once called yourself a “melting hippo” is the type of affable self-awareness that makes Mr. Capaldi so dang likable. That the “Forget Me” video is a shot-for-shot remake of Wham!’s “Club Tropicana” is also deeply on-brand. “In the end it was like “Oh right, me in my underwear, this is a no brainer,’” he told us in the vid’s corresponding Footnotes episode. Don’t forget: underneath that jokester veneer is a deeply talented songwriter armed with a seismic rasp. He and the band really flew in this live performance. It should get everyone excited for the new album, ‘Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent.’ More Lewis is something to look forward to in 2023.
