Manuscript artist and author Debra Band will discuss her five biblical illuminated manuscripts recently acquired by the Library of Congress. In this illustrated lecture, she will explore the distinctly American character of her interpretations of the Song of Songs, Psalms, the early women’s narratives of the Hebrew Bible, the traditional Friday evening Sabbath liturgy, and Qohelet (Ecclesiastes).
Band will reflect on the creative process behind these works, unpack their rich and layered symbolism, and consider how they express her deep commitment to the United States, to Jewish religious and historical heritage, and to the enduring connections between American and Jewish values.
