MoAn Inc. | Let's Talk About THE SECRET HISTORY by Donna Tartt (Fan vs Ancient Historian Book Review) @MoAnInc | Uploaded November 2022 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
Obviously, this book doesn't necessarily give classicists the best name, but despite that, The Secret History is still one of my all-time favourite books.
In fact, I love this book so much that I struggle to find the words for this review without spoiling the story. I would hate to drop any hints as to how Tartt's narrative unfolds, simply because this book is just so utterly fantastic that to do so SHOULD be a crime. What I will say is that the suspense does not die down until the very last line of this 600 page novel - which is, in itself, an impressive feat in storytelling.
I will also comment on the classics and ancient history aspect of this book, considering that's primarily what I do on my GoodReads page. I adored the sprinkling of both Latin and Greek throughout the narrative (probably because I could understand it and felt like this was an intimate communication with the author, weirdly) and further appreciated the odd reference to ancient texts, rituals, and names in general. Julian was a very Plato-esque type of teacher given that all his classes revolved around discussion rather than lecture or note-taking, which I thought was a nice nod to the Academy and Lyceum styles of learning in the Ancient Greek world. The bacchic rituals get an absolutely awful name in this book (as they probably should), but the references to the Pentheus myth made this all highly educational in the most subtle of ways.
All in all, this book is incredible. And before anyone asks - I do not have a favourite character. Oh no, I lied - I think Julian is my favourite character.
