Just before his hanging, he imagines escaping by plunging into the river below and swimming to freedom. In his mind, he experiences a vivid and exhilarating journey through the woods, evading capture and returning home to his family. However, the story culminates in a shocking twist: it is revealed that his escape was merely a hallucination occurring in the moments before his death. The narrative explores themes of time, perception, and the fragility of life.")

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a short story that explores themes of mental illness and gender roles in the late 19th century.
The narrative is presented through the diary of a woman who has been prescribed a rest cure by her husband, John, a physician. She is confined to a room in a rented mansion, where she is forbidden from engaging in any creative activities or intellectual stimulation. The room has yellow wallpaper that she initially finds repulsive.
As time passes, the woman becomes increasingly obsessed with the wallpaper, believing it hides a woman trapped inside. Her mental state deteriorates as she identifies with this figure, feeling more and more confined by her domestic life and the restrictions placed upon her.
Ultimately, she tears down the wallpaper in a desperate bid for freedom, symbolically liberating herself from the constraints of her environment. The story ends with her completely unhinged, but in her madness, she finds a sense of empowerment. The tale critiques the oppressive nature of societal expectations for women and highlights the consequences of denying them autonomy.")
