![Korean Pronunciation: When Does ㄱ Sound Like ㄲ? (+ Vocab List & Dictation!) [LIVE]

01:21:34 Pronunciation Quiz!
Hi, everyone!
Have you ever noticed that ㄱ sometimes suddenly sounds like ㄲ, even when it doesn’t seem to follow one of the consonant assimilation rules you’ve learned?
For example, 성격 is pronounced [성껵], not [성격]. 여권 is pronounced [여꿘], not [여권]. And 창고 is pronounced [창꼬].
This pronunciation change is called tensification, or 된소리화 in Korean. Some cases can be explained with clear rules, but others happen simply because pronouncing them that way feels more comfortable and natural to native speakers. In those cases, there isn’t one clear rule to explain why. It’s honestly more like, “It’s because… that’s why!” 😭
So the best way to learn these words is to keep hearing them and gradually become familiar with their pronunciation.
There are many more Korean words that undergo tensification besides the ones I mentioned above. For this live class, we’ll begin by focusing on the tensification of ㄱ!
We won’t just practice pronunciation - we’ll also learn lots of useful Korean vocabulary and do listening and dictation exercises so that you can recognize these words when you hear them in real conversations.
I hope many of you can join us! If you enjoy this class, I’ll try to cover the tensification of ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅅ, and ㅈ in future live classes as well. 😊
