Setting up a long term system of slavery requires the cooperation of the slaves. The only way to secure this cooperation is by taking over the slave's group identity. In order to do this a Master must strip the slaves of their vulnerability(sense of boundaries and awareness of foreign invaders.) This is done by application of shame. The end result is a slave who defines himself by his Master's threat narrative. He is a hero if he serves her vulnerability; a villain if he fails her or causes her vulnerabilities; and an idiot if he has vulnerabilities of his own.
As long as the Master is seen as more vulnerable than the slave, she maintains control. The moment the Slave starts to assert his own vulnerabilities(ability to judge actions based on his own benefit--boundaries), he starts to slough off his slave identity.
Thus a system of slavery will last only as long as the Slave perceives the Master as more vulnerable than himself.
