The balance of life in Galawain's Maw has been upset by the arrival of a new predator, one that could potentially take the title of the alpha predator of the temple... but that's not happened. Sul, the current alpha and a female line, refuses to come out of their den, the way to it laden with many traps. Her prospective challenger is Orenos, a mountain of a bear that has the strength to pose a challenge, but he hasn't. Whether it's fear or complacency, he chooses to linger in Galawain's Maw, threatening to disrupt cycle of predator and prey.

As we are an outsider, the one in charge of the temple has for some reasons decided that we are best suited to handle the situation and this is done by slaying one or both of the alpha predators. Lyrin's line of thinking on the matter is that Sul has set up an advantage for herself, one she'd be a fool to give up. With age comes wisdom and though she's not as stronmg as her challenger, her cunning is every bit a weapon, one that Lyrin appreciates.
