Doom II: Hell on Earth us a first-person shooter developed and published by id Software. It is the sequel to id's prior hit, Doom, and was first released on October 10, 1994 for MS-DOS.
Mechanically, the game is not substantially different from its predecessor, though it does feature new visuals, enemies, and a new weapon. Doom II's level design is substantially different, and features stages with more verticality, huge open areas, and large clusters of opponents.
The game takes place on Earth and later in Hell. Earth has been invaded by demons, which are generally thought to be aliens, and it is up to the protagonist to stop the invasion and find a way home.
Doom II was a success, and was pre-ordered in high numbers. It would receive a number of expansions and positive reviews, though some critics noted that it merely refined the original at a time where games developed rapidly.
