A hidden HELL MODE has been found in this game. Apparently common knowledge in Japan. It doesn't seem to be covered in English anywhere (sorry if it is, but my research skills are crap).

Hell Mode Code enter at title screen: Up, Left, Right, Right, Down, Up, Up
Screen will turn to Nightmare Fuel if entered correctly.

According to the GameFAQS thread,
1) It adds to opponent levels so they are higher than yours
2) It makes all the enemies GON (with multicolor skins)
So it turns out that these different skins aren't unused:

3) It makes trap spawns extremely high.

Also the same thread found out that to unlock the hidden wallpaper (and be S Rank) I was talking about in Part26, you have to have 50% A rank as a hunter and have 100% items. Thanks to everyone involved please know that am I grateful that you guys put in all the work and creativity to figure it out.
