What if a simple Dollar Tree dish towel could become a charming handmade junk journal?
In today’s video, I’m transforming a sunflower dish towel, a full-size manila envelope, and a few inexpensive Dollar Tree supplies into two sweet sunflower-themed journals. I’ll walk you through creating the fabric covers, lining the inside with contact paper or scrapbook paper, adding lace, choosing the papers, building the signatures, and binding each journal with a five-hole pamphlet stitch.
These journals are filled with a cozy mixture of tea-stained paper, office and ledger papers, envelopes, coloring pages, notepad paper, illustrated book pages, and other simple supplies. I was even able to create two journal covers from one dish towel!
This project did not go perfectly—my sewing machine struggled with the texture of the towel—but I found a creative way to cover the skipped stitches with Dollar Tree lace. Sometimes those unexpected changes become the sweetest details in the finished project.
In the next Dollar Tree video, I’ll be creating coordinating handmade ephemera for these journals using more inexpensive finds, including mini booklets, coin envelopes, bookmarks, altered flash cards, and decorative pieces.
