Leona Lewis Talks Stevie Wonder: On the Record
Leona Lewis, winner of Season 3’s The X-Factor, carries a powerful weapon: a four-octave range that she uses to great effect on her new release, I Am. The album is rich with tales of soul-searching, personal redemption and even a dash of defiance.
Lewis took our On the Record challenge, in which she was given 45 seconds to talk about one of her all-time favorite records. Lewis selected the classic Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder. (Great taste, we say.)
“I used to hear it all the time on my dad’s record player. It’s been a very big inspiration for me in my writing,” she says. “I actually got to perform with Stevie Wonder -- it was one of the highlights of my career!”
Lewis should be used to career highlights. She’s enjoyed chart success with each of her releases (she’s sold a combined 20 million albums), and on I Am she collaborated with Grammy-winner Diane Warren. She’s also carved out a niche for herself as a philanthropist and animal rights spokesperson and landed her first film role last year.
But the path to make I Am was fraught with challenges. Lewis severed ties with the label that launched her career after rumored creative differences with them over the direction she was taking. Finding a new home with Island Records seemed to have been the elixir to Lewis’ ailments, and after she wrapped up recording her new album she was confident enough to launch the #IAmEmpowered campaign in June where she encouraged fans to share their stories of how they conquered their own difficult situations.
On the song “Power,” Lewis seems confident and more than happy to leave her problems behind her. “This is where you end and I begin,” she sings. There’s little regret and you can visualize Lewis standing ramrod straight as she stares down a past nemesis -- and then promptly turns on her heel and walks away toward her new future.
