Here, as presented live at the Burnett Breakfast, the "Musical Memories" segment of the program complete with the original narration by our own Bob Noel, he of the apple-shaped tones and cupped ear.
Maybe a lot of the music on this record helped change the buying habits, over a period of some 20 years, of a couple of hundred million consumers. Maybe it served well in the selling of 550,000,000,000 Marlboro cigarettes, 1,978,000,000 packages of Rice Krispies, 140,000,000 barrels of Schlitz, and perhaps a can or two of Green Giant Niblets.
Probably it did. But that's not solely why we're offering it up in wax to Burnett people. There are other reasons: First, it's awfully good listening. The music was arranged and performed by Dick Marx and Associates, and it also represents the fine work of other talented composers such as Bernie Saber.
Second, it shows what can be done with creative music to parcel the personality of a product in tune form and make it highly marketable. Hardly a minute goes by where in hundreds of cities across the country one or more of these melodies doesn't conjure the image of its product. And vice versa: it's unlikely you can down a stein of Schlitz without hearing a strain of the theme somewhere deep in the mind's ear.
And the third reason: While Dick and the Ensemble were going through this Cavalcade of Burnett Sounds, the looks on the faces of you, the audience, were something to see. The response, periodic and final, broke the applause meter. So we figured it'd be nice for everyone to have these Musical Memories preserved to hold onto from here ever after.
